Jordan as a semi arid land is considered as one of the most affected countries in the middle east with  water resources shortages problems. Main  factors  are the already limited resources plus the increasing demand caused  by population  increase,  industrial and agricultural growth, enhanced  standards of  living and the instability in the area that prevents the developments and  integration of  water  resources projects between  the surrounding countries.  As a result, the limited water resources are being exploited leading to a severe environmental  deterioration  in the quantity  and quality. Jordan now is suffering from a severe water problem  that  is  affecting  the  socio-economic  stability in the land. During the last years, 3 groundwater  aquifers were  completely  destroyed  through  salinization  and  hundreds of farmers, financial and social organizations were destroyed.

Water & Environment department was established to address water and environment problems in Jordan and in the middle east. The main duties are to assess the impact of different activities on the environment with special emphasis on groundwater aquifers and to tackle the existing problems through scientific research and management plans.
