Serbia positive of winning the Davis Cup again

Novak Djokovic’s renewed dedication to his country’s Davis Cup cause this year has left Serbian supporters confident that their nation can win the competition again this year.

Serbia’s chances of winning the contest have always hinged on the availability of Djokovic who played a key component in their 2010 triumph, winning all seven of his singles matches that year. A year later he was injured as his nation slipped to overcome against Juan Martin Del Potro’s Argentina in the quarter-finals and last year he chosen to jump the contest completely to concentrate on Grand Slam success.

Present world no.9 Janko Tipsarevic has always been a stalwart for Serbia through thick and thin but his presence was not enough in 2012 as they fell to an inspired Czech Republic side containing Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek in the quarter finals.

But Djokovic has reaffirmed his commitment to his nation this year, competing in a first-round tie against Belgium on clay just days after winning the Australian Open.
“The Davis Cup title came in the right moment. I believe that feeling of sharing one of the greatest titles in our sport with my group for the nation, in our country, was one of the best feelings I experienced as a person,” he told the press before this week.

This year with Tipsarevic and Djokovic side by side once more, Serbia will be strong favourites. Spain are badly weakened by the emptiness left by Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer and might fight to overcome Canada in the first-round while Roger Federer has chosen not to help Switzerland’s cause against the Czechs to the defeat of Stanislas Wawrinka.

Argentina have discovered that they can not always rely on Juan Martin Del Potro to compete for them and while Juan Monaco is currently closing in on the planet’s top ten, in Del Potro’s absence the Argentine need to fill the second singles berth with journeymen for example Carlos Berlocq or Horacio Zeballos.
