Workshops:
1. Ideal Use of Privatization
Revenues in Jordan: This workshop was held at the
Marmara Hotel on Nov. 13, 2001. The main working paper
was presented by Dr. Yusuf Mansur (EJADA), and commented
upon by Dr. Montaser Oklah, assistant resident representative
and programme director, UNDP. The workshop was headed
by Dr. Ibrahim Badran, deputy director of Philadelphia
University.

What After the Economic Reform Program?: This debate
session was held at the Marmara Hotel on Oct. 24, 2001.
The main discussion was introduced by Dr. Muhammad Al
Nabulsi, former governor of the Central Bank and director
of the Board of Directors of the Trust and Investment
Company. Muhammad Hatamleh, banker, presented a paper
on applying economic reform on the Jordanian economy
and the results accruing from it. The debates were lead
by Dr. Muhammad Haitham Al Hourani, executive director,
JFED.
3.Competitiveness
and the Successful Experiences in Penetrating International
markets: This workshop was held on April 26th at
the Marmara Hotel in Amman. The main working paper was
presented by Mrs. Nisreen Barakat, the Director of the
Competitiveness Unit at the Ministry of Planning; pursuant
comment were made by Mr. Youssef Mansour, an Economist
and Senior Consultant for Jordanian Resource Development
at the European Commission (EJADA), and Eng. Omar Washah,
the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the
Petra Engineering Industrial Company. The workshop was
headed by Dr. Bashir Zoubi, the Economic Advisor at
the Prime Ministry.

Public finances in light of the new liberalized economy:
Challenges and Perspectives: The Jordanian Forum for
Economic Development organized this workshop on June
25th at the Marmara Hotel in Amman. The main working
paper was presented by Mr. Mohammad Abu Hammour, the
Secretary General at the Ministry of Finance, and was
commented upon by Mr. Haidar Murad the Head of the Union
of Jordanian Chambers of Commerce, and the Amman Chamber
of Commerce, Mr. Mohammad Smadi, the ex-secretary General
of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and Mr. Mohammad
Hatamleh, en economic researcher at the Jordanian Forum
for economic Development.

8. The Jordanian Industry: Challenges and Perspectives:
Three working papers were presented during this workshop.
The First by Mr. Mazen Al Saket, general manager
of the International Textile Manufacturing Company;
the second by Dr. Sameer Umaish, advisor to the minister
of industry and trade and the third by Nisreen Barakat
from the Ministry of Planning.
Discussants were a number of industrialists and specialists
.. Dr. Mohammad Al Atrash, Mr. Ahmad Al Saadi, Mr. Jamil
Jubran, Dr. Khaled Amin Abdallah, Mr. Yaser Abu Hammour
and Mr. Hani Saudi.
This workshop was held in cooperation with the Society
of Investors at the Sahab Industrial City and the Jordan
Export Development and Commercial Centers Corporation
on Oct. 24/1999.
9. The Jordanian Pharmaceutical Industry:
Challenges of Accession to the World Trade Organization.
Dr. Adnan Kelani, the director of the Arab Unions of
the Manufacturers of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Appliances.
Discussants included a number of representatives from
pharmaceutical industries as well as economists and
academics namely: Mr. Anis Muasher, Dr. Adli Mansour,
Dr. Bassam al Talhouni, Dr. Mazen Qatu, Dr. Maisa Al
Saket and Dr. Adi Arida in cooperation with the Jordanian
Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers at the premises
of the Jordan Export Development and Commercial Center
Corporation- Amman on Nov. 23/1999.
10. Jordan's Accession to the World Trade Organization:
Challenges and Perspectives. The main working paper
was presendent by Dr. Mohammed Halaiqah, the secretary-general
of the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the time.
Discussants included a number of economists. This workshop
was held at the Meridien Hotel - Amman - Dec. 27/1999.
11. The Agricultural Sector and the Challenges
of Reviving Agricultural Exports:
This discussion group was held on March 27, 2000 at
the Export Development Organization. Dr. Salem Al Louzi,
head of the Amman Bureau of the Arab Organization for
Agricultural Development, presented the main working
paper; while Dr. Haitham Hourani, executive director
of JFED, headed the meeting.
Participants in this group, who commented on the main
working paper, included Mr. Hasan Nabulsi, head of the
Jordanian Farmers' General Union; Dr. Samir Habab, a
professor of Agricultural Marketing at the Jordan University;
and Mr. Akef Al-Zoubi, head of Studies at the Agricultural
Marketing Organization.
The purpose of this meeting was to formulate the necessary
recommendations and viable suggestions in the field
of developing agricultural production, and to enhance
exports of these products in light of Jordan's commitment
to liberalize its markets and abolish all restrictions
and customs fines on imported agricultural products
within a predetermined time frame.
12. The Transparency of Statistical Data in Serving
the Private Sector and Economic Decision Makers:
This discussion group was held on July 25, 2000 at the
Amman Chamber of Industry. Dr. Hussein Shakhatreh, general
manager of the Department of Public Statistics presented
the main working paper. Dr. Fahd El-Fanek, economic
researcher and daily columnist at Al Rai Newspaper,
headed the meeting. Participants in the discussion of
this working paper were Mr. Mohammad Rawashdeh from
the Economic Department at the Prime Ministry; Mr. Yasir
Abu Hamour, director of the Al Nahdah Research Center;
Mr. Mohammad Al Khasawneh from the Royal Scientific
Society; Dr. Mohammad Abdel Hadi from the Philadelphia
University; Mr. Samir Ghawi an economic researcher at
the Jerash University; Mr. Walid Samhouri from the Arab
Bank; and Mr. Tayseer Smadi from the Central Bank of
Jordan.
This discussion group met to highlight the strategic
role of statistical data in economic development, and
to discuss the new directives of the Department of Public
Statistics in adopting transparency and speed in the
supply of information, thus helping both the private
and the public sectors in their planning, policy, and
decision-making.
13. Industrial Exports and the Role of the Free Trade
Agreements in Enhancing Them: This discussion group,
headed by Mr. Othman Bdeir, head of the Amman Chamber
of Industry, met on July 31, 2000 at the Amman Chamber
of Industry. Dr. Samir Omeish, deputy secretary-general
of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, presented the
main working paper. Participants in this meeting were
Dr. Abdel Halim Abdeen, head of the Advisory Society
of the Amman Industrial City; Mr. Ali Obeidat, head
of the Advisory Society of the Al-Hasan Industrial City;
Mr. Maher Al Naser, head of the Irbid Chamber of Industry;
and Mr. Ahmad Smadi, head of the Department of Research
and Studies at the Amman Chamber of Industry.
The purpose of this meeting was to identify the conditions
of the agreements concerning this field, and to highlight
their benefits, particularly the Qualified Industrial
Zones Agreements and the Free Trade Agreement with the
USA, which provide an opportunity for the Jordanian
industry to penetrate the American market without any
restrictions in terms of quantity or customs taxes.
At the same time, it requires the reinforcement of competitive
standards of these products, and improvement in the
standards of quality, an increase in the knowledge of
the requirements of the American market, and collaboration
to establish shipment and export technicalities.
14. The Privatization of the Media Sector in Jordan:
This discussion group, headed by Dr. Ibrahim Badran
from the Philadelphia University, was held at the Marriot
Hotel on October 25, 2000. Dr. Taleb Rifai, minister
of Media, presented the main working paper. Participants
who discussed this paper included a number of economists,
educators, and media specialists, such as Dr. Munther
Al Masri, head of the Higher Council for science and
Technology; Dr. Adbullah Nsour, a member of Parliament;
Mr. Saqer Abdulfattah, head of the Investment Department
at the Housing Bank; Dr. Adel Qudah, head of the Privatization
Executive Unit; and Dr. Tayseer Abu Arjah, a university
professor.
The aim of this meeting was to discuss the Media sector
in Jordan today, and its future outlook in light of
the government's directives to privatize it, as well
as the effects of this process on the liberalization
of the media, the freedom of expression and publication.
Also discussed was the anticipated economic effect resulting
from the impact of this process on local and foreign
investments, and the forecast for new work opportunities
for the Jordanian workforce specialized in this field.
