Paper No. (11)

Jordan and Arab world in the environmental sustainability index 2001:

This paper contains a brief summery of the results of world Economic Forum for the sustainability indicators in the world 2001. The indicator of sustainable development is the numerical measurement of the progress that a country has made in the process of sustainable development. In a survey of 122 countries the three countries with the highest value of this indicator were Finland, Norway and Canada, thus ranking as the (3) most developed countries in the world during the year 2001, while the (3) rated last on the list were Haiti, Saudi Arabia, and Burundi, with countries like Ghana and Honduras ranking somewhere in between. The value of the sustainable development indicator indicate the extent of success that a country has had in the field of sustainable development, while a low number indicates that a country is facing major problems in attaining success in realizing sustainable development.

The sustainable development indicator was compiled from 22 major indicators, divided into 67 numerical and statistical variants, whereby these indicators and statistics were chosen based on a specific evaluation of the available environmental information, and the literature and studies published in the world, in addition to extensive consultation and analysis.

The indicator of sustainable development is a comparative study between the countries of the world to measure their success in achieving sustainable development in accordance to a precise numerical methodology and approach. This figure is a qualitative aid to decision-makers of these countries that helps them analyze their economic and environmental policies, in order to improve them in relation to sustainable development. In addition to all this, the sustainable development indicator also helps to:

Identify the issues and subjects that are presenting problems in the national performance of each country in the field of sustainable development, and to identify the obstacles preventing the desired success.

Follow-up on the policies in order to identify weaknesses and strengths.

Compare the environmental performance between countries.

Determine some of the best policies in the field of sustainable development.

Analyze the interaction between environmental and economic performance.

In conclusion, the countries with the higher income have better sustainable development results, although when a comparison between countries with similar incomes is done, no direct link between the level of income and environmental performance is found. The indicator of sustainable development is an example of the ability to analysis the available environmental information, in order to achieve an appropriate and convincing evaluation of the success in the field of sustainable development between countries, that is build on scientific basis. This means that scientific data that is up-to-date and accurate is very important to the researchers, and should be made available to them, in order to allow them to reach precise results and conclusions on the level of environmental standards in their countries' policies.
