The Methodology of National Preparatory Activities for the World Summit on Sustainable Development

The discussions of the Jordanian Environmental watch program 4th dialogue session revolved around the national readiness for the International Sustainable Development Summit, which is due to, be held in September 2002 in Johannesburg/South Africa, and which is attracting the attention of the entire world.

Due to the importance of this Summit globally, discussions were focused on the efforts being made on a national level to prepare for it, and the importance of exerting coordinated efforts to prepare for participation in the activities of this Summit. All countries should prepare themselves for this Summit in terms of portraying their achievements in the field of protecting and conserving the environment since the Earth Summit (Rio 1992) until now, whereby many of them have come a long way in this field. Since the 1992 Summit Jordan has attempted to implement the principles that were endorsed at the Summit, therefore it is imperative that these achievements be shown to the countries of the world when the representatives of Jordan attend the Summit.

In order to effectively participate in the national efforts being exerted in preparation for the Johannesburg Summit, and in light of UJRC's Jordanian Environmental watch program role in encouraging dialogue, the watch program held its 4th Dialogue Session to discuss the methodology being implemented to prepare for the 2002 Summit. The proceedings of the Session revolved around Jordan's achievements since the Earth Summit of 1992 until today, and the work that Jordan must completed before the 2002 Summit, how to coordinate national efforts in order compile a comprehensive report that includes the environmental problems, challenges and achievements, and what is the required role of the Government, Private Sector and Social Society Organizations, in order to effectively be prepared for this Summit.

Several recommendations were made, the most important of which being:
(1) The importance of establishing a National Committee to prepare for the forthcoming Summit, whose members should be well informed in the field and who should work in a transparent manner when handling these issues. The Committee should help in the evaluation and preparation process, and should make recommendations and suggest solutions.
(2) The delegation, which is to represent Jordan at the Summit, should include qualified entities that are continuously working to improve Jordan's environment.
(3) It is vital to identify the standards necessary for sustainable development and for the environmental status in Jordan. This is required from all those working in the field of Environmental protection.
(4) It is important to create a sustainable development bureau in every Jordanian organization, and to draft local related strategies, whereby each entity working in the field of the environment will outline its own strategies.
(5) It is vital to prepare a comprehensive report on Jordan's achievements in the field of the environment since 1992 until today to be presented at the Johannesburg Summit.
(6) It is necessary to ensure dialogue between the Government, NGOs and the Private Sector in order to identify the stance of each one prior to the Summit.
(7) It is important to document the various agreements that Jordan has signed, and the success stories it has had in the field of the environment, along with Jordan's achievements in the field.
