The Environmental Media in Jordan and the Challenges of the 21st century

After ten years of environmental awareness and environmental media campaigns and projects in Jordan, the base of environmental media is still fragmented and incapable of facing the media challenges posed by the modern information revolution and the increasing complexity of the environmental knowledge and its linkages to several other developmental sectors. This paper presents an analysis of the state of environmental media in Jordan via content analysis of environmental coverage in the three Arabic language dailies in Jordan in September 2000. This analysis showed that the environmental coverage is directly correlated with the number of pages in each newspaper while the focus was on issue related to water management. The majority of news sources were local and international news agencies, which have covered environmental issues in descriptive rather than critical and analytical methods.

The paper states that the environmental media in Jordan does not a special identity and suffers from several problems and obstacles, some of which relate to the general Media State and others, are specific for environmental media.

The obstacles related to general media issues are weak command in English language and non-professionally in environmental media and high costs of issuing environmental publications and the governmental control of main newspapers and weakness in investigative journalism. As for obstacles specific for environmental media they consists of lack of journalists specialized in environmental issues, lack of incentives for environmental journalism in general, weakness in media performance of major public and private environmental institutions, lack of training courses and difficulty in simplifying technical environmental knowledge and terminology.

The paper emphasizes on the necessity of upgrading the environmental media in Jordan and moving away from traditional journalism technique to modern methods and enhancing professionalism and team work as well as coordination between various sectors and utilizing the potential of modern communication channels in spreading environmental awareness. The paper recommends preparation and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for environmental media and establishing joint media campaigns between different organizations as well as spreading environmental awareness to the levels of chief editors and media managers to incorporate environmental issues into their media plans. The paper stresses also on raising the professional level of journalists and increasing translation efforts into Arabic especially for environmental topics and privatization of media institutes.
