Nuclear accelerator for the Synchrotron laboratory An advanced scientific facility - a UNESCO gift to Jordan

The Second Dialogue Session of the "Hot Environmental Issues Forum" was focused on the Project that aims to build a Nuclear Accelerator for the Synchrotron Laboratory in the Ala'an Village, which is part of the Balqa Applied Sciences University. In the field of Nuclear Energy this is considered a major advancement, and is a pressing requirement in the field of scientific research and training in the field of Nuclear Science, since it has various applications in the fields of Medicine, the Environment, Engineering and Agriculture, in addition to the other vital fields. However, the local society, especially the residents of the Ala'an Village, have expressed their fear regarding this project, particularly since a large section of these people have no information regarding these issues.

The session began with an introduction to the characteristics of this Nuclear Accelerator, its features and the benefits that will be achieved from its establishment, and what Jordan will attain it. In addition to the precautionary safety measures that were taken in order to avoid any possible danger that could result from this Accelerator, and the opinion of the local society regarding the establishment of this highly sophisticated scientific edifice.

Since this Project involves the establishment of a Scientific edifice that is the first of its kind, and it is related to Nuclear Science, the residents of the Ala'an Village are against such a project, especially since no environmental impact assessment was made for this project like those done for other projects, adding to the fears and concerns of the people living in the area.

The "Hot Environmental Issues Forum" organized a Session to debate this issue, and invited a number of environmental experts to attend. The Session resulted in a number of recommendations, the most important of which are:
(1)The importance of conducting an accurate environmental impact assessment Study for the Project by an unbiased and certified entity prior to the implementation of this Project.
(2) Conducting extensive workshops in the Ala'an Village to be attended by the residents of this area, people who are concerned, and experts in this field, in order to explain to the people of Ala'an the details of this project with transparency and honesty, in a down-to-earth manner.
(3) It is vital that such important scientific Projects are not impeded, and that people should be convinced that they do not pose any danger to them.
(4) It is necessary to consider this Project a national Project, and all efforts should be united to ensure the best results. Additionally, all the concerned authorities should do all they can to ensure that there is no environmental danger from such a project.
